If you have ever wondered how to take care of a rescue kitten, you’re not alone. Thousands of shelter kittens need loving homes and veterinary attention, and you can learn a great deal from them. Here are a few ways to help you care for your new kitten. Whether you’re fostering or adopting, there are some basics that you should know. Read on to learn how to keep your rescue kitten happy and healthy!

Once a kitten is about four weeks old, it’s usually ready to use a litter box. Choose a litter box with clay litter as it’s safer for small kittens. Ensure that your kitten learns to scratch in the litter box so it can begin to learn this behavior. At around eight to ten weeks, it’s time to find a new home for your kitten. Once you’ve found it, you’ll want to start socializing it.

Keep your rescue kitten warm by keeping its temperature constant. If your kitten is cold, gently warming its body temperature will help it recover faster. You can use a heating pad wrapped in towels, or a hot water bottle heated to 100 degrees. Some veterinarians have incubators that can keep cold kittens warm. Remember that kittens can’t digest food when they’re cold, so you’ll need to provide a constant source of warmth.

When feeding your rescue kitten, ensure that it’s clean. Kittens can nurse on your chest or inside you, so make sure that it’s a clean towel when nursing. After nursing, make sure it gets plenty of water and treats. If you’re unable to feed the kitten on its own, you can use a bottle and feed it to the kitten at home. If you’re unable to feed the kitten, a kitten may not survive the summer.

A baby kitten’s genitals are sensitive. If they’ve been abandoned by their mother, they need stimulation. This stimulation should happen at least once a day. The genitals should be rubbed with a cotton pad soaked in warm water. Make sure to massage the genitals only as much as necessary to make the kitten poop. Don’t rub the genitals back and forth, though, because this can irritate the kitten.

When caring for your new rescue kitten, keep in mind the age of your rescue cat. The younger the kitten is, the more familiar it will be with humans. But older kittens will need more interaction with humans. When caring for your kitten, remember to apply patience and utilize its hunting instinct. A weary kitten can’t resist the opportunity to pull a toy past you. And, don’t forget to wash your hands frequently.

Keep in mind that your kitten is not a human baby. You need to take care of them as though they were yours! Feed them with formula, and don’t forget to burp them. The kitten will stop suckling when it’s full. To prevent the cat from aspirating the milk, hold the bottle at an angle. When it burps, gently pat its back.
